SANBI Offers Conservation Worker Opportunities / Jobs in South Africa

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for school leavers to become Conservation Workers at the Karoo Desert National Botanical Garden in Cape Town (2 positions). This is part of the Groen Sebenza (Jobs Fund) Programme aimed at developing priority skills in the biodiversity sector to create sustainable job opportunities for unemployed graduates and non-graduates (school leavers with a matric certificate). The programme offers a stipend of R4,500.00 per month. Successful candidates will commit to duration of their contract with their host employer.

Key responsibilities:

  • Assist with the hard & soft landscaping, maintain garden sections and plant care
  • Ensuring the safety of visitors/hikers as well as the maintenance of paths and fences.
  • Collections of plant material.
  • Preserve and encourage biodiversity. Waste management.
  • Be responsible for garden assets & all tools issued
  • Identify possible risks (fire, theft, pollution, invasive weeds, security problems, dangerous animals, etc.) to visitors and staff
  • Carry out any basic emergency procedures.

Requirements for All Applicants / Eligibility Criteria

Applications from rural unemployed youth from previously disadvantaged backgrounds are invited for the above positions. Applicants need to have the following:

  • SA citizenship.
