WESSA YOUTH ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES PROGRAMME

WESSA, in partnership with the National Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA), invites applications from unemployed youth between the ages of 18 and 35 for the 2019 Youth Environmental Services Programme. This is a year-long learnership programme that will expose those selected to mentored work-integrated learning opportunities, accredited Environmental Practices Skills training, and selected non-accredited training courses. A training stipend of R95-00 per day worked, assists with transport and communication during the programme. This is payable monthly via electronic transfer to the participant’s bank account.

This environmental programme is focused on community services within the environmental sector. Participants will be actively engaged in doing community work through being placed with a Host Organisation as close to their own communities as possible. Work and training will be both practical and theoretical, and expose learners to hand-on examples of sustainable living.

Recruitment Process

Applications are invited from motivated individuals from the designated groups i.e Black, Coloured, Indian or Chinese youth looking to broaden their understanding of the environment and sustainability. This learnership programme is designed to be used as a stepping stone to employment and study opportunities. Preference will be given to women and disabled people. As a minimum requirement, candidates must:

  • Have successfully completed Grade 12 or equivalent with a Natural Science as a matric subject, with preference for tertiary graduates
  • Fluent in English or Afrikaans
  • Be passionate about protecting the environment and be able to demonstrate some level of interest in workingin the environmental sector
  • Have had some experience as a volunteer
  • Be between the ages of 18 – 35
  • Be willing to work at hosts and offer community services in their immediate areas
  • Not have a Schedule 1 criminal record
  • Not have been employed on an EPWP/EPIP project after 1 August 2018
  • Be a South African Citizen with a valid ID book
  • Be willing to commit to a full-time programme from 18 March 2019 to 13 March 2020
  • Have a valid bank account in their own name
  • Reside in one of the following area: Brandfort, Theunissen, Verkeerdevlei and WinburgWe have positions available at hosts: game reserve workers, environmental educators, municipal waste monitors and park staff, recyclers, administrators
