SANBI Experiential Learning Programme in South Africa: SANBI Careers

Six-month work-integrated learning opportunities are available at SANBI’s Pretoria, Walter Sisulu (Roodepoort) and KwaZulu-Natal (Pietermaritzburg) National Botanical Gardens from 1 January 2016 – 30 June 2016.Students will gain hands-on experience in horticulture and have a garden/ living collection project for the duration of their programme. This will be in the form of an area in the garden/ collection that is already developed and requires on-going maintenance and improvement.
Students will be solely responsible for all the propagation, maintenance, soil preparation, planting and labelling of the section, in consultation with their mentor.

Positions available (please select only one on the application form):

  • Pretoria NBG: 2 student positions
  • Walter Sisulu NBG (Roodepoort): 2 student positions
  • KwaZulu-Natal NBG (Pietermaritzburg): 2 student positions

Who is eligible to apply?

  • Second and third year (registered) South African students who study horticulture (Diploma/National Diploma) are urged to apply.
  • Students must be passionate about horticulture, enthusiastic and eager to learn.

Note: Placement is only for those students who still have to complete their required 12 months experiential learning. Students who were previously placed within SANBI need not apply.

Value: R3 000.00 per month. No benefits apply.
Duration: 1 January 2016 – 30 June 2016

Applications should include a full CV, certified copy of ID and academic record, a letter from your academic institution indicating you still need to complete a WIL programme, letter of reference (academic), your goals while training at SANBI and your letter of interest in applying for the programme. Submit completed application and a letter of motivation to students@sanbi.org.za (Subject: work-integrated learning 2016).

Candidates will be expected to be available for interviews on a date and time as determined by SANBI. SANBI reserves the right not to fill these positions.

If no response has been received within 21 days of the closing date, candidates may assume that their applications were unsuccessful.
