The EThekwini Maritime Cluster (EMC) is a non-profit company that was launched in 2009. The EMC provides a platform for collaborative engagement between different levels of government, state owned enterprises and the maritime community to implement programs of common interest that support the growth and improve performance and competitiveness of the maritime industry. As part of its Training and Skills Development Programme EMC has identified a need to develop and train Maritime Economists as we have identified a gap in terms of this niche area of study in the sector.

Maritime Economists will fulfil the following role in the industry:

  • Economic and financial evaluation of port
  • Analyze the economic factors involved in maritime-related products distribution
  • examine the techniques of finance and recommend improvements
  • Outline organizational structures of maritime-related business concerns
  • Shipping and mining projects
  • They may also have to study government regulations and requirements in maritime business.

Background

Economists study the way society distributes scarce resources such as land, labour, raw materials, and machinery etc. Economists devise methods and procedures for obtaining the data they need.
